Malaria Prevention

Malaria is a tropical disease contracted by 350 – 500 million people each year, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. There is currently no vaccination against Malaria but the disease can be prevented by taking Anti-Malaria tablets.

Malaria can be contracted in 105 tropical and sub-tropical countries and the disease is prevalent throughout Asia, Africa, South America and other regions. Malaria is transmitted through mosquito bites, and while covering your arms and legs, sleeping beneath a mosquito net and using insect repellent creams are all good preventative steps, only Anti-Malaria tablets can greatly reduce the risk of contracting the illness.

Travellers to destinations affected by Malaria should obtain tablets from a travel clinic at least one week prior to departure. Different tablets are needed for different destinations, and some medications require the traveller to begin taking the tablets one week before departure. samedaydoctor will advise travellers on the specific tablets necessary and the duration of which the tablets should be taken. Note that all Anti-Malaria tablets must be taken before, during and after a visit to an affected area.

Symptoms of Malaria include fever, shivers, sudden coldness, vomiting, joint pain, anaemia, retinal damage, jaundice, convulsions, and loss of consciousness to name a few. The disease can be fatal but is avoidable. Visiting a walk-in travel clinic a few weeks before your trip is the most preventative measure the traveller can take.

Children

Children are at an even greater risk of contracting Malaria in affected regions. Tablets can be administered to children but it’s important to note that not all tablets are suitable for younger children. Consult your walk-in travel clinic for advice on preventing Malaria in children.

Pregnant Women

Not all Anti-Malaria tablets are safe for pregnant women to take. The private doctors at our travel clinic will advise you if you are pregnant and wishing to travel to a malarial region.

Each year, 2,000 British nationals contract Malaria from travel abroad. It is preventable by visiting a travel clinic and obtaining the Anti-Malaria tablets specific to your destination before leaving the UK.
